The 'Dorothy Perkins' roses, growing outside the garden area, is an old variety of climbing rose. It was developed by a rose hybridist, E. Alvin Miller in 1908 who was hired by Mr. Perkins, of Jackson & Perkins Company. The rose was developed in honor of and named after Mr. Perkin's grandaughter: Dorothy Perkins.
