2006

Feb 2006 Feeding time around the farm can get pretty routine. Cheryl and Grampy usually open and feed most mornings. It's usually me that feeds in the late afternoon and closes everybody in for the evening. I generally have a system that works very well for me. It's very methodical and roughly goes clockwise around the farm. The funny thing is all the residents here on Dalby Farm know my routine almost as well as I do. And, if don't you know, they let me know, whenever I alter my course.

Nate, our Nubian goat and Sophie our Southdown ewe are usually the first to see me start the afternoon feed. They are the ones that alert the rest of the residents that supper is on its way! The pigs start squealing, all the goats start bleating, the geese and ducks start honking and the chickens come a runnin'. "This is Heaven".

March 2006 We trimmed some hooves today. First we did Nate because usually he is pretty easy. I don't know whether it was just his mood or whether he didn't like the location we chose to do the trimming but he was not very cooperative! It is funny because usually Mariah is the difficult one but today she was an angel. I guess we had a little role reversal today. Sophie was cute because she stood watching us the whole time and was probably wondering when we were going to go after her. She will be sheared soon so we will trim her hooves at the same time. She is safe for now!

Oh well, Nate and Mariah look lovely with their pedicures (or should I say hooficures!) I think that the kids will be the next to be trimmed.

March 2006 Today I finally came in contact with an American Chinchilla Rabbit breeder from New York. For months, I have been looking into the various rare rabbit breeds. The American Chinchilla rabbit seemed appealing to me so I have been contemplating adding this rare breed to our farm. I am more encouraged after e-mailing her and finding out more details about this breed. She has two does that will be having babies at the end of next month. I believe that I would like to have these rabbits but I am not sure whether we want to breed them or just have them here for exhibition purposes. I guess if we find that there is some interest in this breed, like from 4H for example, then we may get a pair and breed them. We will see about that and time will tell, but at least for now, we are in contact with a breeder and that is the first step!

March 2006 Today I went up to sit with Patience and Pumpkin our Ossabaw Island hogs. I can honestly say, I love every one of our animals. Many times people ask me, " Who is your favorite animal"? For me, that is a difficult, ever changing answer. Sitting in the pigpen with these two beautiful animals makes me so relaxed. The hustle and bustle of our every day lives seems so very far away.

If you were to ask me today and then again tomorrow, which animal is my favorite, you would probably get a different answer each time. I guess if you really want to know the answer, you will just have to ask me and we will see who it will be that day!!!!
